Breeding shepherd dogs should always prioritize their working abilities. The focus should not be solely on external appearance and beauty, as this can lead breeders astray. Breeding on a large scale in kennels is detrimental to the quality of shepherd dog breeding. Breeding for business purposes often treats dogs as commodities, which can be harmful to the breed. It is best for breeders who work with one or two dogs to produce strong and trainable animals. Breeding should only be done with dogs that have proven their ability to work, rather than relying on show awards. The value of a dog for breeding should be based on its efficiency for work, not its show honors. -- Max von Stephanitz
